What is this course?

This is an introductory online 6-week class for beginners or refresher course for practising meditators, tailored to suit Sensitives and anyone wishing to be part of a community of consciousness on a deeper level. This is a sheltering environment and welcomes everyone. Each class lasts 90 minutes and will include a 20 minute teaching, a 20-25 minute guided meditation, a 10-15 minute break to reflect, write, draw, start or keep a Meditation Journal, and then a gentle period of Q&A and discussion. Journal prompts will be offered for the week, non-compulsory reading recommendations will be offered weekly for those interested.

If you have a candle, have it nearby - we collectively light the world with kindness. We offer salutations to those we love, those who are unwell, all suffering beings and the earth and cosmos that we share. It is recommended to remove shoes and find a comfy place in which to immerse yourself. If anyone has any problems working with the breath, there are alternatives and please let us know. If any issues arise during the course those too, can be addressed. Meditation is a wonderful practice for most people but for some, strong feelings can arise that can be challenging.

This course is grounded in Vipassana practice (Insight Meditation) through the Theravada Buddhist teachings, and is amended to living in the modern world. It is a rich practice in breath-work and body relaxation, training the mind to build a physical sense of space, through acknowledging that we are not our thoughts. We come to discern that we are interconnected and inter-dependant with the whole world. The Buddha taught that personal experience is the way forward, so this is a course that is not based on dogma or religion and is based on ethical and practical teachings that opens awareness to the world within and without, designed to reduce personal suffering through love and compassion - acknowledging that we are interconnected and are all one. Simply put it is a love based practice.

Your teacher

Lee is half way through her second year of training with renowned teachers Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield through the MMTCP, Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certificate Programme. She has been giving meditation classes for a year now. An artist, poet, and mystic, she has been a member of the IF Crowd this past year, so many of you will be familiar with her.

This course also forms Lee's Practicum with MMTCP and your participation and little assessment of the course at the end, is deeply valued.

Testimonials for Lee

I have been meditating off and on (mainly off) for 50 years, starting with a Samatha course when I joined the Cambridge University Buddhist Society in 1969. Since then I’ve practiced other meditation techniques (not all Buddhist). I am not a good meditator – and certainly don’t expect to attain enlightenment during this lifetime! – but I have had considerable experience of meditation teachers. For the past year I’ve been attending by weekly zoom Mindfulness Meditation sessions led by Lee Strasburger, who is being trained by Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach. We’re a small group (rarely more than 6) but the intimacy which this affords is an advantage and the fact we all continue to participate after a year testifies to her success. Before each session, she teaches Buddha's Four Foundations of Mindfulness and what characterises her approach is the creative use of pictures, poems and story-telling. She is an excellent teacher and very dedicated, as indicated by the fact that she has continued to teach despite her recent move from the USA to the UK. I can highly commend her as a meditation teacher.

Over the past year, I have attended many of Lee's meditation sessions, which she runs with grace and charm. The variety of the various themes she has introduced to the group have been most illuminating. I feel that she has contributed to my personal spiritual journey with a great deal of warmth and humour which I have really appreciated.

As someone new to meditation I thoroughly enjoy listening to Lee's quietly soothing voice guiding us into deep relaxation and presence, rounded with stories and poems relating to our universal human struggles. Always a lovely way to take a pause and calm one's mind.

I’ve only participated in Lee’s meditation sessions occasionally due to other life responsibilities - but I find them relaxing and peaceful in a deep sense. And the accompanying photograph, poem and a few sentences of reflection add to this. But also, and surprisingly, if I just think about these sessions on occasion, I tap into a similar, though lighter, wave of that peacefulness.

I have been attending weekly meditation sessions led by Lee Strasburger for a year.  Lee brings her whole self to her classes and I have profited a lot by joining them.   Each class is a specially crafted experience that includes images, quotations, poetry, sometimes music, and of course meditation.  Lee is a caring, generous teacher and calming presence.  I always leave in a more peaceful state than I arrived.
